"Green code" for EU chemical distributors

Upgraded distributors' assessment scheme greeted as milestone for Responsible Care programme

A new environmental assessment scheme for European chemical distributors has been greeted as a "milestone" for the chemical industry's Responsible Care programme for constant improvement in health, safety and environmental performance. Esad II was launched on 15 October by chemical manufacturers' body Cefic and distributors' group Fecc.

As its name suggests, Esad II is not the industry's first crack at monitoring distributors' environmental performance. Its predecessor, launched in 1999, was designed to achieve similar outcomes. It was never implemented fully due to various weaknesses, according Fecc (EED 19/06/98).
