The greenhouse gas benefits of Sweden's programme for biogas fuelled road vehicles is being largely cancelled out by methane emissions during gas cleaning, a study for the Swedish environmental protection agency has found. Biogas has to be cleaned and purified to 90% methane before it can be used in vehicles, and consultancy Atrax found 2% leakage with currently used water scrubbing. Leakage could be cut to acceptable levels by using more expensive cleaning techniques, it added. Sweden is the European leader in the sector. See Atrax Energi and Dagens Nyheter newspaper article.
