Beverage carton sector concludes environmental management systems "not suitable" as environmental product information tool

The first investigation of green business tools led by the European Commission's enterprise directorate has concluded that environmental management systems (EMS) cannot support efforts to provide better product information - at least for the drinks packaging sector.

Following the launch of the integrated product policy (IPP) last year Commission's environment directorate began setting up broad "pilot projects" covering certain product groups (EED 30/06/04). Its sister enterprise directorate, meanwhile, launched a narrower appeal for projects looking at single IPP 'tools', such as EMS.
