Biolubricants set to get EU market boost

Member states agree criteria for new addition to European environmentally friendly product list

Environmentally friendly lubricants are to be the latest addition to the EU's list of products eligible for its Flower product ecolabel, European Commission working group meetings concluded this week. Both industry and environmental groups have welcomed the initiative.

To qualify for the label lubricants have to show low toxicity, high biodegradability and be substantially based on vegetable sources rather than petroleum. Similar labels already exist in other ecolabel schemes including Germany's Blue Angel and the Scandinavian Nordic Swan.
