Streamlined EU pesticide residue rules approved

European parliament approves compromise regulation; cumulative and health effects emphasised

New EU rules on maximum residue levels (MRLs) for pesticides in foods and feed have cleared a final legislative hurdle following their approval this week by the European Parliament.

The vote confirms a deal reached with representatives of EU governments under which the council of ministers has accepted several changes compared with its common position (EED 27/04/04). The council now also has to rubberstamp the deal for the legislation to enter force.
