MEPs reject ban on 'interim' waste shipments

Environment committee vote trims Blokland report; MEPs blast Commission call for new impact assessment

MEPs on Monday rejected one of the toughest amendments proposed by rapporteur Hans Blokland to a proposed revision of EU rules on cross-border waste shipments. The environment committee voted against introducing a ban on shipments for so-called 'interim operations', such as mixing and repackaging (EED 16/09/05).

Opposition to the ban sprang principally from fears over the knock-on effect it would have on the waste stream. MEPs also voted to keep animal by-products outside the regulation's scope, against the wishes of Mr Blokland.
