EU court rulings in waste and cadmium cases

The European court of justice has condemned Greece for failing to clamp down on uncontrolled and illegal waste landfill sites. During the case the government admitted that there were still 1,125 such sites in Greece in early 2004 and that it did not foresee all of them being closed until 2008. In a separate judgement, the court has ruled that cadmium levels in toys are subject to restrictions in a 1991 marketing and use directive as well as those in the EU's 1988 toy safety directive. See judgements in cases C-502/03 and C-9/04.
