Nuclear power "essential to stop climate change"

Cross-party group of MEPs backs nuclear energy as "the main option" to cut greenhouse gas emissions

The EU must return to nuclear power and support its expansion overseas if it is serious about tackling climate change, a group of 25 MEPs said on Wednesday. The declaration is the latest sign of growing support for atomic energy in the face of global warming.

"Nuclear energy should play an increasingly central role in the global fight against climate change and remain a pillar of the EU's energy and environmental policy planning," says the declaration, signed by members from across the political spectrum.
