Arctic pollution hot spots around the Barents Sea and the White Sea are to be tackled through a major new programme of environmental investments agreed by the environment ministers of the Barents Euro Arctic Council (BEAC) countries at a meeting in Finland this week. A total of 42 hot spots in north-western Russia, including major industrial and mining operations, have been designated for projects to be launched by 2013. A new Barents hot spot facility will help fund the projects. See declaration and BAEC environment working group.
