The Czech government has approved a hit list of "problematic" national environmental rules to be be streamlined to reduce burdens on business. The development shows that the EU's current environment vs competitiveness debate is as much alive in the new member states as in the EU-15.
The Czech process began last year when business groups and trade unions urged the government to review what they said were burdensome environmental rules that exceeded EU requirements. The environment ministry claimed the process was biased and initially boycotted it, before being persuaded to join in.
