German parties agree green policy orientation

More continuity than change visible in grand coalition's environmental plans for four-year parliamentary term

Germany's centre-left SPD and centre-right CDU/CSU, which are near to forming a "grand coalition," have agreed an environmental policy substantially similar to that of the outgoing SPD/Green government. The document is due to be finalised on Friday. Much of its contents have been leaked to the German media.

On nuclear power, the CDU/CSU has dropped demands to delay Germany's phase out by extending reactor operating lifetimes (ED 13/07/05). The SPD/Green ecotax energy tax programme will be retained. The coalition will also maintain a target to source 20% of electricity consumption from renewables by 2020.
