The EU's most senior environment civil servant will leave the job later this month, it was announced on Wednesday. The head of the European Commission's environment directorate, Irishwoman Catherine Day, is being promoted to become the secretary general of the whole commission.
Her replacement will be Peter Carl, a Danish national currently running the commission's trade directorate. Born in 1945, Mr Carl was educated in the UK and has no significant career experience in environment policy. He has spent the bulk his working life on trade-related portfolios, with a short periods in transport and as an economist at the World Bank.
