UK launches "cooperative industry regulation"

Key industry sectors agree to take on environmental improvement targets under new regulatory approach

Key industry sectors in England and Wales are being asked to agree to long-term environmental improvement targets under an innovative regulatory approach launched by the Anglo-Welsh environment agency on Tuesday. The approach "goes beyond traditional regulation" by using a mix of regulation and voluntary initiatives, the agency said.

The agency has launched its first three sector plans, for the cement, chemicals and nuclear industries. More are due in the coming months for power generators, the food and drink industry, waste management, water companies and dairy production.
