German experts welcome EU resources policy

Official advisory body sees thematic strategy as chance to marry environmental and competitiveness concerns

The German government's panel of environmental experts (SRU) has welcomed plans for an EU sustainable use of natural resources but warned that it must not replace effective existing environmental policies. In a position paper the SRU said it particularly approved of a proposed database detailing how resources move through the economy. The strategy should include proposals for limiting existing pollution and avoiding new pollution hazards, it said. The resources strategy is now due from the European commission on 21 December (ED 25/11/05). See press release and position paper.
