EU carbon capture development group launched

Industry and governments join forces on CO2 sequestration; North Sea states to agree storage rules

A European stakeholder platform for capture and storage of carbon dioxide from fossil fuel power generation was launched in Brussels on Thursday. The "zero emissions technology" platform will coordinate research and "remove obstacles" to implementation (EED 20/04/05). The European commission has committed €70m of EU research funding to the sector by 2006.

* In a related development, on 30 November the UK and Norwegian governments agreed to set up a task force to develop regulations for large-scale CO2 storage under the North Sea.
