European biomass energy action plan released

Commission unveils proposals to boost EU renewable energy share by 5%, cut 209m tonnes CO2-equivalent

The European commission will next year "work towards" proposing EU legislation on renewable heating and cooling, it announced on Wednesday in an action plan on biomass energy.

The EU executive described renewable heating legislation as "the missing piece of the jigsaw". It even held out the possibility of future legislation including targets. Until now - despite pressure from environmentalists and renewable energy interests - it has argued that this would be too difficult (EED 07/05/05).
