UK sets out marine conservation goals

Five new strategic objectives include pledge to halt deterioration of marine biodiversity

The UK has pledged to halt the deterioration of its marine biodiversity and promote recovery "where practicable" as part of a five-point series of strategic goals to enhance marine nature conservation. The new goals are contained in a government response to a series of recommendations on the marine environment tabled by a multi-stakeholder panel last year. A recent environment ministry report described the state of the UK marine environment as "mixed" (EED 01/03/05). See press release and report.
