EU gives all-clear over packaging chemical

ITX contamination of carton drinks "not a cause for concern", advises European food safety authority

Europe's food safety authority (Efsa) has ruled that the presence of packaging chemical ITX in food, "whilst undesirable, does not give cause for health concern at the levels reported". Efsa assessed the chemical after an Italian court ordered packaging manufacturer Tetra Pak to recall cartons following the discovery that ITX had migrated into contents (EED 23/11/05). The company stressed that it was well on the way to removing ITX from all its packaging. See statements by Efsa, European commission and Tetra Pak of 22 November and 9 December.
