EU issues revised sustainability strategy

Commission sends "positive" message to EU stakeholders, highlights key priorities but does not set new objectives

A review of the EU sustainable development strategy issued by the European commission on Tuesday constitutes a "platform for action" by stakeholders, its president, Jose-Manuel Barroso, said on Tuesday. The review includes some more detailed targets than the original 2001 strategy but proposes no new actions beyond those already in the pipeline (EED 18/06/01).

The main difference is the proactive tone used by the commission throughout the document. "We cannot just focus on doom and gloom", it said in an explanatory document. In February the commission found that key unsustainable trends identified in 2001 were getting worse (EED 10/02/05).
