The European commission will adopt two major environmental strategies on Wednesday aimed at modernising EU waste management practices and increasing the efficiency of natural resource use. They are the third and fourth out of seven thematic strategies promised under the bloc's sixth environmental action programme.
The waste recycling and prevention strategy proposes to revise the EU's thirty-year-old waste framework directive. Both strategies include elements of deregulation. They also propose programmes that could lead to new European requirements in future.
