Leaders reaffirm EU's better regulation drive

EU council calls for progress on simplifying and assessing laws, estimating administrative burdens

EU leaders renewed their support for the bloc's programme of improving its regulatory framework at a meeting in Brussels, ending on Friday night. The event was dominated by tough bargaining over an outline EU budget for the period 2007-13.

In its first detailed comments for some time on the better regulation initiative, the council welcomed the European commission's latest proposals for simplifying EU legislation (EED 26/10/05). It called for high priority to be given to getting simplification proposals passed.
