EU ministers formalise air quality accord

Environment council confirms political agreement on revision of EU air quality framework

Environment ministers reached political agreement on a revision of EU air quality legislation at their council meeting in Luxembourg on Monday. The deal formalises an outline agreement sealed in June (EED 28/06/06).

A full political agreement was not possible in June because the European parliament, which has co-legislative rights over the revision, had yet to adopt its first-reading position. After legal and linguistic checks the council text will be confirmed as a common position and returned to parliament for a second reading.
