Barroso promises first-ever strategic EU energy review to promote low-carbon economy; Verheugen reports on better regulation

Boosting energy efficiency and redoubling the fight against climate change will be among the European commission's top priorities next year, its president José Manuel Barroso told MEPs in Strasbourg on Wednesday as he presented the EU executive's work programme for 2007.

Mr Barroso picked out the energy and climate as the first in a series of key areas of commission activity. In all, five of 21 "strategic initiatives" to be delivered by the commission next year have a strong environment policy focus.
