European GM rice testing rules in force

All imports of US long-grained rice to be tested for illegal LL 601 strain at operators’ expense

All imports to Europe of American long-grained rice must be tested for the presence of an unauthorised genetically modified (GM) strain under rules published in the bloc’s official journal on Tuesday.  The EU acted after the non-authorised LL 601 strain was found in several European countries (EED 19/10/06).  Authorities must report any finding of LL 601.  Importers must bear the costs of testing.  The decision is to be reviewed by 15 January at the latest.  See decision 2006/754/EC.
