Industries that don’t accept high environmental standards are "ignoring the tide of history", EU environment commissioner Stavros Dimas suggested on Thursday. Mr Dimas said he saw "a real shift taking place" in business to accept the need for stricter regulation in the face of rising environmental pressures.
Speaking at a meeting organised by the British chamber of commerce in Brussels, Mr Dimas insisted that environmental protection has economic benefits for EU industry and outlined eight ways that he said ambitious environmental standards "can help increase profits".
