MEPs urge beefed-up resource use strategy

Environment committee rapporteur calls for ambitious new proposals with "clear targets and binding timetables"

European commission proposals to reduce the environmental impacts of natural resource use "cannot be regarded as a genuine strategy", according to the MEP leading debate on the issue in the European parliament.

But in a draft resolution on the commission’s thematic strategy on natural resource use Dutch communist Kartika Liotard has resisted pressure from fellow parliamentarians to reject the plans outright. Doing so would benefit neither the environment nor the economy, she says.
