No EU appeal against WTO GMO ruling

NGOs warn of "dangerous precedent" as commission decides to let go of transatlantic trade dispute

The European commission has decided not to appeal against a World trade organisation ruling in September that its blockade on marketing of new genetically modified organisms (GMOs) violated trade rules (EED 29/09/06).   Environmental groups condemned the decision as setting "a dangerous precedent for future environmental disputes".  Commission officials confirmed a Reuters report on Tuesday that the case was being dropped.  An appeal is not merited because the WTO ruling was retroactive, one told ENDS.  See Reuters article, and press release from Friends of the Earth Europe.
