Commission tilts towards industry on packaging

Delayed official review of packaging directive promises actions to safeguard EU internal market

The EU’s 1994 directive on packaging and packaging waste management has achieved its environmental objectives, but not those to safeguard the internal market, the European commission has stated in a delayed review of the rules that has delighted packaging industry interests.

In the review the commission said it would act to strengthen national implementation of the directive’s "essential requirements", a mechanism for encouraging eco-design of packaging long championed by industry but criticised by environmentalists.
