EU set to shift its sights on clean energy

Renewable energy industry alarmed at plan to drop sector-specific goals in switch to higher-level targets

The European commission will call for a significant shift in EU policy on renewable energy as part of the wide-ranging energy strategy due in early January, it is emerging. Many stakeholders have been left unsure or angry about the EU executive’s intentions.

January’s energy package will have at its core a strategic energy review, including two high-level targets for 2020, one for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and a new objective to increase the share of "low-carbon energy" (EED 08/03/06).
