MEPs take stock of Reach agreement

Parliament holds one last debate on EU chemical policy as it prepares to give its formal approval

The European parliament held one last debate on the Reach chemical policy on Monday, following the compromise reached with governments two weeks ago (EED 01/12/06). The assembly will give its formal approval to the legislation on Wednesday.

Rapporteur MEP Guido Sacconi said the EU had "set out from a very deep far valley" and "climbed a very high mountain" by reaching the compromise. Liberal Chris Davies said Reach "may prove to be one of the most significant measures this Union has ever taken, of real long-term advantage both to our economy and our environment."
