Ministers prepare for last EU environment council under Finnish presidency on 18 December

EU environment ministers will meet in Brussels on 18 December for their last quarterly session of 2006. The main issues on the agenda will be as follows:

The meeting’s high-point should be a political agreement on a directive safeguarding the marine environment. After extensive discussions the ministerial deal is virtually done. However, ministers have still to finalise how binding should be the directive’s central objective of achieving "good environmental status" in all sea areas.
