EU passes biocide review milestone

Wood preservative becomes first existing substance to be re-approved under ten-year review process

Wood preservative sulfuryl fluoride has become the first biocide to be re-approved for marketing and use in the EU under a review process launched in 2000. The formal decision is due to be published in the official journal on Thursday.

Sulfuryl fluoride is one of more than 900 active ingredients for biocides that were on sale when the EU passed a biocides directive in 1998. This required all such substances to be scrutinised and either confirmed or excluded from the market (EED 14/01/98).
