Council debates post-2012 climate options

Several EU-15 countries back 30% emissions cut by 2020;  new member states take more cautious stance

There is significant support among EU governments for the bloc to commit unilaterally to reducing greenhouse gas emissions 30% by 2020, it emerged at the EU environment council in Brussels on Monday.

Ministers discussed the issue in the run-up to a proposal on the same subject due from the European commission on 10 January. They also adopted conclusions on the recent round of global climate talks in Nairobi (EED 20/11/06).
