Council "making progress" in waste discussions

Environment ministers also tackle GMOs, biodiversity, pesticides and water quality at last meeting of 2006

There is "no credible alternative" to a European commission proposal to classify municipal waste-to-energy plants based on their incineration efficiency, EU environment commissioner Stavros Dimas told environment ministers on Monday. The ministers briefly debated the issue at their environment council meeting in Brussels.

EU governments have been unable to reconcile differing positions on the issue and their disagreement is one reason for a delay in reaching a political agreement on the revision of the bloc’s waste framework directive (EED 13/12/06).
