NGO calls for moratorium on EU biofuel targets

Corporate Europe observatory warns biofuel expansion could "aggravate, not mitigate" climate change

Campaign group Corporate Europe observatory (CEO) has called for a moratorium on all EU biofuels targets, warning that they risk "aggravating, not mitigating, climate change". In a briefing paper published on Monday the NGO claims global biofuel expansion will raise food prices and prompt deforestation and biodiversity loss.

The paper accuses the European commission of having put industry interests and energy security considerations ahead of the fight against climate change when in January it proposed a binding 10 per cent target for biofuels in EU road transport by 2020 (EED 10/01/07).
