EU organotin ban proposals tabled

Tin-based PVC stabilisers could face wide phase-out under recommendations from risk assessors

Risk assessment consultants to the European commission have proposed sweeping EU restrictions on the marketing and use of organotins. The measures would see a general ban on tributyltin (TBT) and curbs on other organotins in PVC intended for use in consumer products.

The proposals have been made to the commission's industry directorate by British consultancy RPA following a risk assessment submitted last year (EED 15/02/06). The assessment was revised several times after a panel of EU scientists said it was underestimating exposure to the chemicals (EED 05/01/07).
