EU announces sweeping new maritime policy

European commission sets out comprehensive vision and work programme for more sustainable oceans

The European commission announced a comprehensive maritime strategy in Brussels on Wednesday that brings together for the first time all policy sectors that affect the oceans.  The primary environmental component is a marine environment framework directive that is already under debate by legislators (EED 09/10/07).

"I am convinced that a great part of our future lies in the untapped potential of the oceans," said commission president Jose Manuel Barroso. "Our proposal for an integrated maritime policy has been designed to generate growth, jobs and sustainability."
