European states pledge to intensify green efforts

Ministers from 56 countries sign Belgrade declaration on environmental protection

Environment ministers from 56 European and former Soviet central Asian countries have pledged to intensify efforts to improve the environment in the region. In a declaration released on Friday ministers acknowledged problems in implementation of environmental conventions in areas such as biodiversity, water and sanitation. They said they would seek partnerships with other states, NGOs and private firms to improve the situation. The meeting was held in Belgrade last week as part of the UN's "Environment for Europe" discussion forum (EED 10/10/07). See Environment for Europe conference page and ministerial declaration.
