UK proposes packaging recycling rate increase

Environment ministry says raising rate above EU minimum will encourage firms to "design out" unnecessary packaging

The UK's environment ministry has proposed increasing national packaging recycling targets by several percentage points from 2008 to 2012. This would push recycling and recovery levels slightly beyond minimum EU targets of 55 per cent for recycling and 60 per cent for recovery to be met by the end of 2008, the ministry said last week in a consultation document. The higher targets would help encourage packaging users to "design out unnecessary packaging", junior environment minister Joan Ruddock said.
