Commission launches swathe of green infringements

Dozens of legal actions brought against member states for EU environment law failings

The European commission has announced its autumn legal drive against EU member states it says are breaching EU environment and energy rules. The latest quarterly batch of infringement proceedings was approved in Brussels on Wednesday and contains thirty-six actions.

The number of cases reflects a persistently high infringement rate in the environmental sector. The commission is currently drafting a policy paper setting out new measures for improving the implementation of green laws (EED 05/09/07).
