France outlines future environmental policy

Sarkozy announces possible carbon tax and infrastructure freeze as major stakeholder negotiations end

French president Nicolas Sarkozy outlined a wide-ranging plan to reduce the country's environmental impact on Thursday. Mr Sarkozy was closing two days of negotiations between government officials, industry and NGOs on France's future environmental policy.

France will consider a carbon tax on fuels to further shift the tax burden from labour to environmental pressures, the French president said. Participants in the negotiations remained divided over this issue, according to the national press.
