Spain would face economic meltdown IPPC directive applied to the letter, says Ecologistas en Acción

Well over half of 5000 Spanish industrial plants have yet to obtain compliant permits under the EU's integrated pollution prevention and control (IPPC) directive, despite a deadline to do so by Tuesday (EED 12/10/07), according to environmental NGO Ecologistas en Acción.

The situation has arisen because of six-year governmental delay in transposing the directive, lack of support from regional authorities and "ignorance and disinterest on the part of companies," the group said in an analysis.
