EU priority water pollutant list debate to resume

Council finalises law setting out pollutants that will receive special attention under framework directive

The EU's council of ministers will rubber-stamp in the coming days a ministerial agreement reached in June on which water pollutants should be subject to special clean-up measures under the 2000 water framework directive (EED 25/06/07).  The council circulated a finalised list last week.  Once approved, this will kick off a second reading of the draft legislation in the European parliament, where MEPs are expected to insist on an extension of the list to other pollutants and tougher rules on "mixing zones" around the sources of pollution (EED 22/05/07).  See water pollutant list finalised text.
