The European parliament has formally approved a deal reached with EU governments in February to introduce bloc-wide limits on rolling resistance and noise emissions from new tyres. The deal must now be endorsed by the council of ministers.
The new limits were confirmed in Strasbourg on Tuesday in a vote to overhaul EU vehicle type approval rules (EE 18/02/09). The new limits will apply from 2012, and rolling resistance limits will be further tightened between 2016 and 2020, depending on the type of tyre.
