EU in final stretch on green biofuel criteria

European lawmakers will include impact of indirect land-use change on biofuel emissions, but are split on timing

European lawmakers are set to incorporate the impact of indirect land-use changes in the calculation of greenhouse gas savings achieved by using biofuels, sources close to talks on a new EU renewable energy directive told ENDS on Thursday.  But they remain split over when to include the factor in the calculation.

MEPs and EU government representatives are negotiating biofuel sustainability criteria in the context the new renewables directive. Once agreed, the criteria will also be slotted into a revised fuel quality directive (see related article, today's issue).
