Controversial EU tyre noise study published

Green group says claim that tougher noise control limit could compromise safety contradicted by new research

The European parliament has published internally a controversial study on vehicle tyres that is guiding its deliberations on draft new EU standards aiming to cut noise levels and greenhouse gas emissions.

The study was ordered from Spanish consultancy Cidaut to help the parliament consider its response to European commission proposals on sustainable tyres tabled earlier this year (EED 23/05/08).  The proposed noise standards are emerging as the most disputed element of the plan.
