Ministers back new EU chemical labelling rules

Agriculture council approves CLP regulation;  Reach pre-registration deadline passes;  risk consultation opened

EU agriculture ministers have rubber-stamped a revision of the bloc's rules on the classification, labelling and packaging (CLP) of chemical substances. The new rules will implement in the EU a new internationally-agreed scheme for globally-harmonised system (GHS) and complements the new Reach chemical policy.

MEPs backed the revision in September (EED 03/09/08) following agreement on a compromise text (EED 01/09/08). The new rules will now be published in the bloc's official journal.
