A sectoral approach targeting the world's biggest cement producers could "significantly" reduce global carbon emissions from cement production compared to business-as-usual, according to findings released by corporate sustainability group WBCSD last week.
Cement production is likely to more than double by 2030 but carbon emissions may be reduced by up to a quarter, said Howard Klee, director of the WBCSD's Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) (EE 17/08/05). Additional reductions will still be needed on top of this to "fully meet the challenge of climate change", he added.
