EU environment ministers revive carbon label idea

Council calls on commission to consider emissions in revised product energy label, lukewarm on mandatory procurement standards

Member states have asked the European commission to study the possibility of including carbon emissions in EU environmental labels for products.  Environment ministers made their call as part of a general endorsement of a sustainable consumption and production strategy issued by the commission in summer (EED 16/07/08).

The commission should start work "as soon as possible" on common methods to calculate the carbon footprints of products and organizations, ministers say in a resolution agreed on Thursday.
