EU renewable energy law deal confirmed

Text of new directive now settled after Italy withdraws objections at energy ministerial

EU governments and the European parliament have agreed on new legislation to promote renewable energy. The deal was confirmed after a final "trialogue" meeting in Brussels on Tuesday. It is expected to be backed by EU heads of government later this week at a summit to agree the shape of the EU's climate and energy package.

The substance of the new renewables law agreement was settled last week, but the deal was held up by Italy, which maintained an objection to it (EED 04/12/08). French sustainability minister Jean-Louis Borloo announced at the end of a meeting of energy ministers on Monday evening, however, that the objection had been lifted.
